CONCEPT | "SCENT OF TOBACCO"
The project aims to give new life to the neighborhood and by designing a "gold" extension to create a contemporary public space without diminishing the buildings' historical presence.
The concept of the project is to enrich and revitalize the street ensemble. This is achieved by designing a "gold" extension in the form of a negative roof which follows the lines of the existing roofs of the warehouses . Each building has a distinctively eclectic architecture of the end of 19th and early 20th centuries. Modern intervention could be made only in the interior or on the "fifth facade".
The powerful wooden roof structure, typical for the warehouses in the neighborhood is probably the most valuable element of the buildings. The idea of the design is connected with the roof structure of the two buildings of Ivan Vazov Str and aims to present it in a new and different way, namely to remain visible as pergolas, on which "lie" the new intervention in the "tobacco city."
The shell of this “negative roof" is spread over an inner courtyard, it covers and shapes the entrances to the building. This structure is the bold intervention in the urban environment that would revive the "tobacco city" spirit…
These huge single storey spaces are transformed into apartments for temporary or long-term residence, which combine cultural events, industrial culture and bring together people with ideas and attitude towards art. Hotel Nicotiana is the name of the place that will always be lively, there will stay and live artists and connoisseurs.
On the roof of one of the buildings is proposed a bar with a terrace under the wooden pergola and on the other is designed a rooftop pool which reflects the visible roof structure along with the new “negative golden roof”.
